What Do the Children Know?
by Joan Wester Anderson

Brad, the baby son of Peter and Darlene Kutulas, was just learning to talk, and knew only a few words. One was "Dada." "Dada" was not reserved for his father, however; when Brad saw any man, he would shriek "Dada!" in delight. In an effort to encourage him to talk more, Darlene and Peter often showed him photographs of people in books and magazines. Brad would always point to the man: "Dada!"

One afternoon Peter said to Darlene, "Let's show Brad a picture of Jesus." The baby had never seen one, and given the long hair and flowing robes, they wondered how he would categorize Jesus. But when they held the picture up, Brad suddenly grew solemn. Pointing almost in recognition, he said--again and again--a word he had never used: "King!"
